Refund Appeal Process
When a student does not show up for the program that s/he is registered for, our Cancellation Policy requires that we bill the student for the full cost of the program, regardless of whether or not the student ultimately enrolls at the university. Click here to read the full Cancellation Policy. Once a student or family member reserves a spot, the New Student Orientation Program makes arrangements for the student and/or parent and the fee pays for program materials, food, and any other expenses associated with the orientation program upfront.
Avoiding the NSO Fee
To prevent being charged the NSO fee, students should note the cancellation deadline for the program that they register for and cancel with the New Student Orientation Program directly if they cannot attend the program that they are registered to attend. The deadline for all NSO Programs is three (3) business days before the date of their selected program.
Cancellation deadlines are published in the following locations:
- The Cancellation Policy Page
- Within the reservation site itself
- In reminder emails that we send out before sessions
Failure to cancel our program by the cancellation deadline will always result in being charged the fee.

The New Student Orientation Programs Refund Appeal process is active for one orientation season. The following dates are deadlines for Refund Appeals associated with New Student Orientation Programs:

If the refund appeal is submitted after the deadline you will receive an email stating our regrets of processing the refund appeal and refer you to Bursar’s for bill payment options. This applies to all fees as well as students who decided NOT to attend the University of New Mexico for the upcoming semester.
If You Have Been Charged
Students who receive a bill from UNM for an orientation fee must either pay the bill or appeal to the New Student Orientation Program. Failure to take one of these two actions will result in the bill being sent to a collections agency and could ultimately harm the student's credit rating. Click here for information about Collections. We do not want anyone to be sent to collections, which is why we are diligent about encouraging students to cancel by the cancellation deadline for their program.
How to Pay an NSO Fee
All fees are billed to the student bursar account. Click here for information about making a payment to the Bursar's Office.
How to File a Refund Appeal
Please complete the form below. If the form does not appear, please email nso@unm.edu for assistance.
What Information Should Be Included in an Appeal?
Refund Appeals must contain the following information:
- Name and ID # of the student being billed
- Details regarding the circumstances that prevented you from canceling the reservation by the cancellation deadline
- Supporting documentation to verify the circumstances that prevented you from canceling your reservation by the cancellation deadline (required)
Appeals should be addressed to the Director of New Student Orientation, who will review the appeal and issue a decision based on the merits and supporting documentation of the appeal.
What Happens After I Appeal the NSO Fee?
We will notify the student once the Director of New Student Orientation decides the appeal. Appeals that are denied should be paid immediately. We will reverse the charges of appeals that are approved within 30 days.
