Yes! Your orientation to UNM will still take place, but it will take on a new look. During Summer 2020 we will be offering NSO... To-Go!
In recent weeks, we all have been impacted in some way and are now doing things a little different than before for the health and well-being of our communities. New Student Orientation is no exception and we are committed to doing our part to help ‘flatten the curve’ and slow the spread of the virus.
NSO... To-Go! is not ‘just’ an online orientation! It includes several live presentations, Q&A panels, webinars, virtual help sessions, etc. that are designed to help make your transition to UNM go as smooth as possible!
The concept of getting something 'to-go' and enjoying it from home dates back to antiquity! Although orientation will be conducted remotely, our commitment to having a positive impact on the Orientation, Transition & Retention of our newest Lobos is unchanged!
NSO... To-Go! will consist of the following.
- Online Orientation
- Academic Advisement & Course Registration
- Live & Virtual Campus Engagement
- Completion of The Grey Area
- Welcome to The Pack! (expanded programming in August)
Your first step to sign-up for orientation is to click on the link below and visit our reservation system. Once you're in you will have access to all of the orientation dates/types that are available to you - based on your admission status (Freshman, Transfer, Branch student, etc.)

Nothing! Your current, in-person session will remain intact and will be converted to the new NSO... To-Go! format. Although we are moving our program online, we will maintain the order and the date of each originally scheduled in-person orientation session. Our NSO staff will manually move students into their appropriate NSO... To-Go! session and students will receive a confirmation email when this happens.
Since this is a manual process it will take until May 1st to complete. If you do not receive a confirmation email by Friday, May 1st, 2020, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Be sure to check any spam/junk folders in case your email system categorized this correspondence incorrectly.
You should plan to complete NSO... To-Go! during your scheduled orientation session date(s).
On the morning of your scheduled session, you will have access to the online orientation and will receive a detailed itinerary of any 'live/virtual' components that you will be expected to participate in.
Making yourself completely available for the duration of your scheduled orientation will ensure that you have the best opportunity to interact with campus resources and receive any information that will help make your transition to UNM as smooth as possible.
If you would like to change your orientation date you can visit our reservation system and modify your reservation. Click on the 'Dates' section and select the new orientation you're wanting to sign-up for. As long as the session you wish to change to has not reached registration capacity, you will be able to change your orientation session.

Although orientation is online, we strive to build community with live presentations and virtual help sessions. Maintaining original orientation dates helps us organize and manage those NSO... To-Go! features.
In a sense, each session is a virtual appointment that gets students connected to their peers, orientation leaders, campus resources, and academic advisement & registration.
We certainly appreciate your patience, understanding, and cooperation in making this process run as smooth as possible for everyone involved.

We know that during this time of uncertainty finances are a great concern. While deciding to move our programs online, we evaluated our program budget and reviewed the fees that students pay for orientation.
Although in-person costs (meals, housing, facilities, parking, etc.) for the summer are no longer present, we do have fixed costs (NSO... To Go! programming, technology upgrades, orientation leader staffing, etc.) and semester programming costs (Welcome to The PACK!, 'Class of' Day, FYT Scholars etc.) that the orientation fee is applied towards.
- The fee for First-Year students' will be $75
- The fee for Transfer students' will be $50
- The fee for Family Connection participants' has been reduced to $15
Yes! If you signed up for NSO before this change, you will only be responsible for the new rate. Below are two examples that describe each payment method.
Example One... "Paid in full with Credit Card"
- Lobo Louie registered for First-Year Orientation: Session 6 and signed up a guest for the Family Connection program. Louie was charged $225 upon registering and paid this amount in full.
- With the change to NSO... To-Go!, Louie will only be responsible for $90 ($75 + $15) and a credit of $135 will be applied to Louie's Bursar Account.
- After Lobo Louie completes NSO, the difference will appear on the Bursar Account statement as “New Student Orientation Credit” and the amount will be applied towards any outstanding charges Lobo Louie may have (Tuition / Fees, parking pass, meal plan, etc.)
Example Two... "Charged my Student Account"
- Lobo Lucy registered for First-Year Orientation: Session 9 and signed up a guest for the Family Connection program. Lucy was charged $225 upon registering and decided to "Charge my Student Account".
- With the change to NSO... To-Go!, Lucy will only be responsible for $85 ($75 + $15), and the new charge of $90 will appear Lobo Louie's Bursar Account.

Beginning on Monday, June 1st, students will be able to sign-up for virtual events that will take place throughout the summer. This will give students an opportunity to pick and choose what they would like to learn more about and when they want to do so. There will be variety of topics, hosted be many UNM campus departments and services.
In addition, we hope (depending on health and safety guidelines) to be able to host Welcome to the Pack! (August 13 - 16) that will allow students and their families an opportunity to engage with campus and all of our departments.
Yes! We value the fact that our students have a support network at home that will play a key role in their transition to UNM and we hope to partner with you in contributing to their academic success!
Let's face it, your student may not always have the same questions (or concerns) about starting at the university that you may have. We will still offer presentations, conversations, and overall programming… in an online format.

Yes! Through, Monday, June 1, 2020, UNM has moved to a limited operations model to prioritize the health and safety of our students, employees, and the public.
All offices and departments are still available to serve you in a variety of different ways (phone, email, Skype, Zoom, etc.)

Academic Advisement & Course Registration FAQs.
Academic Advisors are preparing to connect with you virtually and looking forward to facilitating your personalized academic advising and course registration experience.
The week of your orientation, you will receive an itinerary with links and information regarding any tasks you need to complete during the advisement process. The process will include 4 steps.
- Email and/or Phone Contact
- Overview of Advisement (Online Course)
- Video Conference for Group Registration (Zoom)
- Individual Advising Sessions (Zoom)
To begin the process of registering for courses, students should sign up for NSO. From there, your advisor will reach out to you. Both Orientation and Advisement must be complete and each respective hold must be removed prior to registering. New Student Orientation will not be able to provide any accommodations for this.
If you are worried that the date of your orientation will affect your courses, don’t be. Our Schools and Colleges pay close attention to the number of students admitted, selected degrees, placement scores, course fill rates, etc. when they are building course offerings.
Across the university, we work diligently on having the same course options for students in May as we do in August.
We encourage Transfer students to meet with their advisor before their Transfer Orientation Program, and they can schedule an appointment through loboachieve.unm.edu.
First Year students can also meet their advisor before NSO... To-Go!, but you will receive lots of advising information through your orientation experience.
Your advisor will begin emailing information at least two-weeks before your orientation session, and we encourage you to email them back with questions and information. You can also email them know and you can find their contact information at http://students.unm.edu/navigating-your-major/index.html.
Your advisor will recommend classes based on your course placement information and your major/degree program.
Your advisor is assigned to you based on your major. You can find a listing of advisors by major at http://students.unm.edu/navigating-your-major/index.html. You can also find your advisor by logging into loboachieve.unm.edu.
You will have a virtual registration session with your advisor at an appointed time. Look out for an invitation sent to your email address.
Advising sessions are remote this summer and accessible with your NetID and password. If they attend it will need to be alongside you. We recommend that you attend the virtual registration alone, as you can schedule a follow-up meeting with your advisor and ask any questions that your parents have about your schedule.
Talk to your advisor to find out what options you have. We want you to be successful so it is important that you are interested and like your classes.
Let your advisor know. Your advisor placed you based on information we have on our records. Perhaps you have information that we need to know about.

Email NSO and/or your advisor as soon as you realize that you want to change your major. Everything advising-related is based on your major, so it is important that we know your major so that we point you in the right direction.
