Returning Students: Placement Exams

Placement into most courses will be based on you ACT or SAT scores, or college courses that you have taken at UNM or another college previously.

Foreign Language Placement
If you haven’t taken a foreign language here or at another college, you may need to take a placement evaluation to make sure you take the proper level course.

The evaluations are administered for each foreign language, such as Spanish, French or German. The language evaluations are free, and the amount of time to take the test depends on your knowledge level.

Advisors can guess where you belong based on the language classes you took in high school, but we cannot tell how much you learned in those classes. An evaluation will place you at the right level. You might be surprised to find out that you place into a higher class than you expected.

For more information about the foreign language evaluations given for placement, please see the Spanish or Foreign Language placement pages in this website.

Please plan on taking any needed placement exams before your advisement appointment.
