In college, you have much more FREEDOM to CHOOSE your classes. To use that freedom you will have to evaluate many options. These Freshman Academic Choices increase your options. Take time NOW (before Lobo Orientation) to narrow down your options when selecting your UNM classes for fall. The classes and programs in this program are specifically for new freshmen. Your range of options depends on your interests and your academic preparation.
There are many different classes offered under the Freshman Academic Choices. We offer four different program types to choose from:
Please visit the sites above to learn about each program type and the incredible courses that they offer!
Participation in FAC courses is optional- and highly encouraged. You should choose at least one of them. These options are only available in to beginning freshmen in their first semester, so you really only have one opportunity to participate in them.
You will register for FAC classes when you register for the rest of your other classes at Lobo Orientation. For optimal availability of FAC classes, try to sign up for the earliest available Lobo Orientation session possible. The reservation system opens at 3:00 pm on
Most students elect to take classes from just one FAC program, but we do not limit the number that students can take. The important thing is to take one. The number of credit hours for FAC classes range from one to seven credit hours. Some have required linked courses that must be taken together, others feature individual seminars that do not require enrollment in more than one course. Read about each program and the courses they offer to see which one appeals to you the most.
Yes! First, sign up for Lobo Orientation. Then, visit the Freshman Academic Choices website to see what each program has to offer. Write down which FAC courses interest you and bring that list with you to orientation.
If you are interested in signing up for the Living and Learning Program (LLP), you will need to contact Residence Life & Student Housing.
