An IS-100 or Introductory Studies Course is a class that teaches the basics in English, Reading or Math, and gets you ready for university-level work. Enrollment in these courses is based upon your SAT or ACT scores.
The classes count toward credit for financial aid or scholarship purposes, but they do not count for graduation. Taking two to three IS-100 courses may delay your graduation by up to one semester.
They are important classes to take if you need to review or build on your knowledge of a subject. Students starting with IS-100 courses get a good foundation that translates into better performance in the rest of their college career. Starting at a level that is too high for you will set you back if you do not understand the material and end up failing the class.
Your ACT or SAT scores place you into IS-100 courses. The scores are:
| Required |
ACT Score |
SAT Score
|
| IS-English 100
|
English 0-18 |
Critical Reading 200-440 |
| IS-Math 100
|
Mathematics 11-18 |
Mathematics 220-440 |
| IS-Reading 100
|
Reading 0-17 |
Composite 400-900 |
| Science 0-18 |
If you feel that you should not be in an IS-100 class because you took honors or college-bound high school courses, then you can take a Compass placement exam and see if you place at a higher level.
