Advisement During Lobo Orientation

The goal of academic advisement is to guide you towards a successful academic career. Advisors can help you learn about the degrees available and understand requirements.

You will have a chance to meet with an advisor during Lobo Orientation. Meanwhile, you can look at the catalog and your college’s website to get some idea of the courses you might want to take this coming semester. You will be registering during orientation, so be prepared by familiarizing yourself with your college’s requirements and options.

Another website to visit is Freshmen Academic Choices. There you will learn about some interesting academic programs offered just for Freshmen.

Placement

Your advisor will place you into your classes based on your ACT, SAT and placement scores. Low scores can place you into foundational (Introductory Studies) courses that do not count toward graduation

If you are not happy with your ACT or SAT scores and where they place you, you can challenge them by taking a Compass placement exam at the UNM Testing Center. We highly encourage students to take the placement exams before orientation, so that academic advisors have the best information available during registration time to put you in the correct level classes.

You can get an idea of where your ACT and SAT scores place you in Math, English and Reading by clicking through My Course Placement, a pre-orientation placement screening, before you attend Lobo Orientation.
